What to Expect
This Rwanda safari centers on an encounter with endangered mountain gorillas in the forested slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, in the country's northwest. After arriving in Kigali and transferring to the Ruhengeri area, trekking day begins with a park headquarters briefing before a 2–5 hour trek and an hour observing a gorilla family. The following day offers a choice between golden monkey trekking or a visit to the Dian Fossey Tomb and Karisoke Research Center, plus an optional stop at Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village. The trip closes with a scenic return to Kigali, with the option of a stop at the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
Day by Day
Arrival & transfer to Ruhengeri
Arrive at Kigali International Airport and drive northwest to Ruhengeri (approximately 2.5–3 hours), with scenic views of rolling hills and tea plantations. Check in at your lodge and relax after the journey.
Gorilla trekking
After an early breakfast, attend a park headquarters briefing on trekking etiquette and safety, then trek through dense forest to locate a gorilla family — duration can vary from 2–5 hours. Spend an hour observing the gorillas up close, with time for photography, before returning to the lodge for lunch and an optional evening relaxation or short forest walk.
Golden monkeys or Dian Fossey Tomb
Choice of golden monkey trekking through the bamboo forests, or a visit to the Dian Fossey Tomb & Karisoke Research Center to learn about conservation efforts and local history, with an optional visit to Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village for local traditions, music, and dance.
Return to Kigali
Scenic drive back to Kigali with stops along the way, with time for the Kigali Genocide Memorial or souvenir shopping before the airport transfer.
